DWC Saves Water

DWC saves water versus conventional gardening methods and irrigation strategies. Good quality water is becoming more scarce, especially later in the growing season and when plants are their largest and need it the most.  Watering restrictions have become a reality in a lot of regions, typically meaning there are days that it is not permissible to water your garden or risk a fine.


What if you could use less water during the growing season, grow bigger, healthier and more delicious crops than ever and spend less time worrying about lugging hoses or watering cans around?

Deep Water Culture (DWC) gardens can accomplish this and more. In real life situations, most gardeners will find they save at least 50% water versus their potted soil gardens or beds—often considerably more savings, in fact.


How can that be?


In traditional soil gardens a LOT of the water that is applied never gets used directly by plants.  When you wet the soil or soilless medium down, a lot of the water is lost through evaporation from the growing medium into the air while only a portion of it makes it into the plant through the roots and out the leaves (transpiration).


In DWC gardens, the rootzone is well protected from the external environment. In the case of HydroBuckets, the HydroLid, HydroPod and HydroFit (neoprene support collars) work together to support plants, keep light out of the root zone and prevent water or nutrient solution from evaporating from the unit.  By far, the vast majority of the water that is added to the HydroBucket is used directly by the plant, i.e. absorbed through the roots and transpired through the tiny openings in the leaves called stomata.


Besides being friendlier to the environment in terms of water savings, there are other benefits:
